What we keep about you, why, and how to make us forget it. Plainly, and short.

Last changed 10 October 2026.

The short version

  • We keep your email address only if you join the captains' list, and only for what you ticked.
  • We do not sell, rent or share it, and we run no advertising or analytics trackers. Our own server counts visits, without cookies, and keeps only daily totals.
  • Every letter has a one-click link to leave. Write to us and we delete you entirely.
  • You can play the rival captains and print the kit without giving us a name or an email address.

The captains' list

When you sign on we keep, in one file on our own server: your email address; the name and the rough place you gave us, if you gave them; what you asked to hear about; the page you signed on from; the times you signed on, confirmed and left; the internet address you signed on from; a secret token for your confirmation and leaving links; your founder's code once you confirm; your public recruiting code; and, if you came through another captain's recruiting link, which captain.

We use these to send the letters you asked for, to confirm the address is yours, to stop people signing others up in bulk, and to count the recruits who join your crew. The internet address is kept for the same reason the confirmation is: to spot and remove abuse.

A captain who recruited you sees only a count of their confirmed recruits, never your information.

The links in our letters carry a code for your place on the list, so we can count which links captains use and the tables they set from them. The counts are kept with your address and deleted when you leave the list.

Visitor numbers

To learn which of our posts and links bring people here, our server counts visits as they arrive: which pages are read; where a visitor came from (the site that linked here, or the tags on our own links); the country, from our network provider; whether it was a phone, a tablet or a computer; and what followed (a game against the rival captains, a download from the print kit, signing on), and how often the sign-up box is shown, as a count. It keeps only those daily totals. No cookies, no tracking script (the page itself reports only that the sign-up box was shown), nothing sent to anyone else, and no internet address stored: a visitor is recognised for one day only by a code that cannot be traced back to them, and the code is thrown away at the end of the day.

Mail

Letters are sent through Resend, a mail delivery service, which handles your address and the letter only to deliver it.

Reservations and payments

A reservation for the wood or acrylic edition is kept on the same list. If you choose to pay what you want for the print-and-play kit, the payment is taken by the checkout service the button leads to; we never see your card details, only that a payment was made, its amount and the email the service gives us.

The game

Every game is kept on our server, whether you play rival captains at /demo or friends in the beta: the seats, the moves and any names typed in, so every captain can come back to it. A finished game is deleted 14 days after its last move, a game that never started after 2 days, and any game after 30 days without a move. While the beta is open to everyone the game sets no cookies. If hosting a table ever needs an invitation, the invitation sets one cookie, fc-beta, which only says the invitation was valid and expires after two days.

Things your browser keeps

The site stores a few small notes in your own browser, never sent to anyone unless you sign on: the recruiting code of the captain whose link brought you here and the secret key to your own page on the list once you confirm. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.

This browser remembers, in its own storage, when it last showed you the sign-up box and whether you joined, so it asks at most once a month and never after you join. That note never leaves your browser.

The page fonts are served from our own server, on the site and in the game, so your browser does not ask Google or anyone else for them.

How long

Your entry stays until you leave or ask us to delete it. When you leave by the link in a letter, we keep the address marked as having left, so that we never write to it again. If you would rather it were gone entirely, write to us and we delete the whole entry.

Children

The captains' list is for people 13 and over. Younger captains are welcome to play the rival captains and the print-and-play kit, which need no account and no address.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted. Reply to any letter we have sent you, or write to us.
